St. Karas

St. Karas

St. Karas, esteemed among the great ascetics of the Coptic Orthodox Church, was born into a devout Christian family in the third century. From an early age, he was drawn to a life of solitude and deep contemplation of the divine mysteries. Motivated by an intense desire to dedicate his life entirely to God, St. Karas left his native city and journeyed into the inner wilderness of Scetis, where he might live as a hermit in continuous prayer and fasting.

The life of St. Karas was characterized by severe ascetic practices and a fervent commitment to God’s service. He lived in a cave far from human habitation, where he spent his days in rigorous fasting and deep meditation. Sustained by the grace of God, he ate sparsely – merely a small ration of dried bread supplemented by wild herbs when needed. This strict regimen allowed St. Karas to reach exceptional spiritual heights, evidenced by the numerous miracles attributed to him.

Numerous accounts testify to the profound impact of St. Karas’s prayers. He is reputed to have healed the sick, exorcised demons, and provided prophetic insight to those who sought his counsel. His presence was marked by a divine radiance, reflecting the purity of his soul and unwavering devotion. Despite his seclusion, people far and wide knew of his holiness, and his fame reached several Christian communities.

One significant episode in the life of St. Karas involved his visitation by an angel, who provided him with the Holy Eucharist and heavenly sustenance. This celestial encounter further solidified his standing among the revered desert fathers of the Church. Until his passing, St. Karas remained steadfast in his solitary life, eternally seeking union with God through prayer and asceticism.

The Coptic Church venerates St. Karas for his unwavering dedication, viewing him as a paragon of piety and devotion. His life exemplifies the virtues of humility, faith, and spiritual perseverance. His memory continues to inspire many to pursue a life centered on spiritual dedication and ascetic discipline.

The blessing of our blessed St. Karas be with us. Amen.
