St. John The Short

St. John The Short

Saint John the Short, also known as Saint John Kolobos, was born in the year 339 AD in the village of Thebes in Upper Egypt. From a young age, John exhibited an extraordinary devotion to the Christian faith, which led him to pursue a monastic life. He travelled to the desert of Scetis, around 360 AD, where he became a disciple of Saint Pambo, a revered Desert Father known for his wisdom and spiritual guidance. Saint Pambo nurtured John in the virtues of humility, obedience, and asceticism.

Saint John undertook rigorous spiritual disciplines and demonstrated remarkable acts of obedience. One such act was when Saint Pambo commanded him to plant a dry stick in the desert and water it daily. Without question, John obeyed, travelling a great distance each day to fetch water. Miraculously, after three years, the stick budded and bore fruit, which Saint Pambo shared with the brethren as a testament to the virtues of faith and obedience.

Throughout his life, Saint John the Short was known for his deep wisdom and humility. Despite his intense ascetic practices, he remained gentle and compassionate, guiding many monks and laypeople in their spiritual journeys. His numerous miracles and profound teachings became widely known, securing his reputation as a significant figure in the Coptic Christian tradition. Notably, he was also associated with miraculous healings and interventions, continually edifying the faith of his followers.

Saint John faced many trials, including being expelled from the desert of Scetis during a raid by the Berbers. He sought refuge in the mountain of Saint Anthony but returned to Scetis after the danger passed. Despite these tribulations, he never wavered in his faith. His resilience and continued devotion made him a source of inspiration for generations of Christians.

Saint John the Short departed in peace in the year 409 AD. His legacy endures through his writings and the accounts of his disciples, who continued to share his teachings and the miracles associated with his life. To this day, Saint John the Short is venerated for his unwavering faith, humility, and obedience.

The blessing of our blessed St. John The Short be with us. Amen.
