St. Arsenius the Great

St. Arsenius The Great

Saint Arsenius the Great, also known as Arsenius of Scetis and Turah, was a prominent anchorite and ascetic monk of the 4th and 5th centuries. His highly revered life is celebrated for his deep spirituality, wisdom, and piety within the Coptic Orthodox Church. Born in Rome around 350 A.D., Arsenius hailed from a wealthy, noble family. His intellectual prowess and profound wisdom led him to serve as a tutor to the sons of Emperor Theodosius the Great in Constantinople.

Despite his illustrious position in the imperial court, Arsenius longed for a deeper, spiritual life. Following a divine calling, he abandoned his prestigious career around 394 A.D. and journeyed to Egypt, seeking the solitary and ascetic life of the desert fathers in Scetis. He adopted the monastic lifestyle under the guidance of Saint John the Dwarf and fervently embraced the virtues of humility, silence, and obedience.

Arsenius’ life in the desert was characterized by his devout commitment to prayer, meditation, and rigorous ascetic practices. His profound desire for solitude earned him the epithet “Arsenius the Silent.” Despite his reclusive nature, his wisdom and saintly life attracted many disciples who sought his spiritual counsel. Among his most notable sayings were teachings on the necessity of silence and the importance of incessant prayer, reflecting his personal spiritual struggles and triumphs.

Enduring numerous trials, including the persecution of Christian monks and invasions by secular authorities, Arsenius exhibited immense fortitude and steadfast faith. He moved to diverse locations, including the Monastery of Tura, eventually settling in the Troe Monastery near Memphis.

Saint Arsenius’ legacy is immortalized through numerous accounts of his miracles and profound spiritual insights. His life serves as an exemplar of ascetic piety and unwavering devotion to God. He reposed in the Lord on the 8th day of the Epiphi in the year 445 A.D., leaving an indelible mark on monastic tradition and Christian spirituality.

The blessing of our blessed St. Arsenius the Great be with us. Amen.
