Abba Bishoy

Abba Bishoy

Saint Abba Bishoy, who is also known as Saint Pishoy, was born in the year 320 AD in the village of Shesna, located in the Menouf district of the Nile Delta, Egypt. His mother sought the solace of prayer to help guide her many children in their spiritual paths. One night, an angel appeared to her, revealing that her son Bishoy was chosen by God to serve Him. Consequently, Bishoy was dedicated to the monastic life from an early age.

At the age of 20, Abba Bishoy entered the wilderness of Scetis (now known as Wadi El Natrun), taking up residence in the monastery under the guidance of Saint Pambo, a desert father known for his wisdom and piety. Abba Bishoy’s life in Scetis was marked by extreme asceticism, prayer, and manual labor. His spiritual teachings and holy life attracted many disciples who eagerly sought his guidance.

One of the most remarkable events in the life of Abba Bishoy was his encounter with the Lord Christ in the form of a humble and weak old man. While preserving his vow of humility, he carried the Lord on his shoulders to offer him shelter. It was only later revealed to him through divine illumination that the frail old man was indeed the Lord Himself.

Abba Bishoy’s reputation for miracles is well-established. It is said that he tied his hair to the ceiling to prevent himself from falling asleep and to maintain his nocturnal vigils. His intercessions were credited with numerous miracles, such as healing the sick, expelling evil spirits, and even managing the water supply in the desert to nourish his fellow monks.

Towards the end of his earthly journey, Abba Bishoy relocated to the wilderness of Anba Macarius in Upper Egypt to escape the invasions of the Berbers. He passed away there around the year 417 AD at an advanced age. His body was interred on the same day as the feast of Saint Paul of Tammah, fulfilling his vow to be buried with his friend, as both saints had promised one another in life.

Veneration of Abba Bishoy’s relics is significant in the Coptic Orthodox Church. His body was later transferred back to the Monastery of Saint Bishoy in Wadi El Natrun, which stands as a beacon of his enduring spiritual legacy.

May the blessing of our blessed Abba Bishoy be with us. Amen.
